# Do kickoffs matter? Kickoff goals and wins by rank

Yes, but how much depends on the mode. In 1v1 a quarter or more of all goals come within ten seconds of a kickoff, at every rank. In 3v3 that share drops from 17% in Bronze to 13% at SSL. Winning more kickoffs wins you the game less often the higher you climb.

These numbers come from Unravel's ranked dataset, **1,500** recent replays per rank per mode. A kickoff goal is any goal scored within ten seconds of the kickoff.

## Winning the kickoff

In 1v1 the kickoff is a real weapon all the way up. The team that won more of them won around **60%** of games through Platinum. In 2v2 and 3v3 it counts in the low ranks and is close to a coin flip at SSL.

In Bronze 2v2, a team's kickoff taker whiffs **17** times per 100 kickoffs. From Champion up it's **5** to **7**. Pick one kickoff, a diagonal flip or a speed flip, and run it in free play until you stop missing.

## What to do

- **1v1 players:** learn one fast kickoff well. A quarter or more of all goals come off it.
- **2v2 and 3v3, Bronze to Gold:** never whiff. The team that wins more kickoffs wins up to 6 in 10 games here.
- **2v2 and 3v3, Diamond and up:** the kickoff itself decides few games. Spend the free play time elsewhere.
