Stay behind the ball

  • Rocket League

The team that spends less time in front of the ball wins about 7 in 10 games, at every rank and in every mode. Hanging back in your own half is different. In Bronze and Silver, the team that spent more time there usually lost.

"In front of the ball" means the ball is between you and your own goal, so it can go past you toward your net. These numbers are from Unravel's ranked dataset, 1,500 recent replays per rank per mode.

Of the stats I compared, only shots hold up this well from Bronze to SSL. Boost, whiffs and speed all matter less as you climb, while this one barely moves.

Some of it isn't your fault, since a counter-attack puts the ball behind you whatever you do. The rest is yours to fix: challenging when a teammate already went, following the ball up the wall, going for a third touch.

Time in your own half

In low ranks the team stuck in its own half is usually the team being attacked, and it mostly loses. From Diamond up it barely matters. Stay goal-side of the ball wherever it is, and don't park in net.

Rotation

Rotations per minute go up with rank, from 9.2 in Bronze 2v2 to 10.8 at SSL. Inside a 2v2 rank, though, the team that rotated less won more often, 56% to 66% of games. Being behind the ball when it's your turn matters more than rotating often. I dug into that in Rotating is losing, or is it?.

See how long you spend in front of the ball, every match.
