What actually wins Rocket League games at your rank

  • Rocket League

At every rank from Bronze to SSL, the team that spends less time in front of the ball wins about 7 in 10 games. Boost and whiffs decide a lot of Bronze games and fade as you climb. Raw speed decides almost nothing above Bronze.

This comes from Unravel's ranked dataset: 1,500 recent replays per rank per mode, and 35,626 of them ended with a winner. For every game I compare the two teams on a stat and note whether the winner had more or less of it. 50% is a coin flip, and anything past 60% is a stat that clearly goes with winning at that rank.

In 1v1, less time in front of the ball wins 79% of Bronze games and still 68% at SSL. In 3v3 it goes from 78% to 66%.

What it means for you

Staying goal-side of the ball wins at every rank. Everything else on the list gets weaker as you climb.

In Bronze, collect boost and stop whiffing: the team with more boost or cleaner touches wins about seven games in ten, and still six in ten in Silver.

Supersonic time goes with winning in Bronze, then stops mattering. It does climb with rank, which is the topic of the next post.

Shots top the list, but that one is partly circular: the team that is winning gets to shoot more.

Run the same comparison on your own matches and see where you sit.
